Encryption of TDS® Basic Cable Services

About Cable Encryption

TDS is encrypting its basic service channels*, which means the signals for those channels will be scrambled and a digital converter (set-top box) is required on each TV in order to see them.

By encrypting channels, TDS is able to:

  • Prevent unauthorized viewing of the channels.
  • Provide better customer experience through the automation of system functions.
  • Reduce the need for scheduled in-home appointments.

Once channels are encrypted, a set-top box will be required on each TV in order to receive Basic service.

What does a set-top box do?

A set-top box converts the encrypted TV signal to a high-quality digital output. It also provides:

  • an on-screen channel guide
  • digital access to all the channels in your programming package (including high-definition channels)
  • digital music channels

Cost of Equipment

The current rate for a set-top box is $3.50/mo. Basic service customers, who do not currently have the required equipment, can receive an Encryption Credit, which provides up to two free set-top boxes for two years. (If you receive Medicaid, you can receive the set-top boxes free for five years.)

Customers who subscribe to other programming packages, yet receive TDS Basic service on a secondary TV, which does not have the required equipment, can receive an Encryption Credit, which provides one set-top box free for one year.

To receive the Encryption Credit, a customer must request the set-top boxes from TDS by calling 1-877-422-5282 during the offer period (30 days pre-encryption to 120 days post-encryption). Specific dates vary based on which TDS market a customer lives in.

Medicaid Considerations

If you receive Medicaid and are a TDS Cable customer at the time of encryption, but do not have required equipment, you are eligible for up to two set-top boxes free for five years, as long as the equipment is requested during the offer period by calling 1-877-422-5282. You must provide proof of Medicaid enrollment to TDS. There are three ways to do this:

  1. Visit your local TDS office and present your current Medicaid card to the customer service associate.
  2. Fax a copy of your current Medicaid card to: 1-575-437-1022.
  3. Mail a copy of your current Medicaid card to:
    TDS Cable
    Attention: Seniors
    901 N. Florida Ave.
    Alamogordo, NM 88310

The TDS account holder must receive Medicaid in order to be eligible for the Encryption Credit. Account holders living in the same household as a Medicaid recipient are NOT eligible.

Additional Information:

When the free equipment period ends, normal equipment rates will apply.

As many set-top boxes can be ordered as necessary, additional charges will apply.

The Encryption Credit does not apply to new TDS Cable customers or those who upgrade to a higher programming package or have existing equipment.

*Basic service is defined as the Limited Basic package in TDS cable markets; except in Alpine N.M. where it is defined as the Full Basic package.
